Remote Access

Remote Access to a variety of campus applications is available to authorized users. Remote Access to VA, SOM, and UMM applications must be approved by your supervisor. Remote Access to GroupWise and the server drives(H,I,J) is available to everyone. All remote access sessions are encypted for security. Please make sure minimum requirements are met before proceeding. Please select the most appropriate link below for detailed information.

Minimum Requirements   |   GroupWise   |   Server Drives   |   VA   |   UMM  |  UPI  |   SOM

Minimum requirements:

  • Broadband Internet Access >=768Kbps (e.g. Cable, DSL, FiOS etc.)

  • Windows 2000/XP (Vista has not been tested yet and is not supported at this time, however, it appears to work with GroupWise web-access.)

  • UMB IT policies must be followed when remotely connecting to any University of Maryland, Baltimore computer based system.

  • Up-to-date virus protection software.
(Symantec Antivirus, with unlimited virus pattern updates, is available to State Employees at a discounted rate. Click here for more information, the software can be picked up at the HSL Circulation desk. UPI, VA and UMM employees are NOT eligible.)

  • All critical updates from Microsoft must be installed. Visit http://update.microsoft.com to scan your computer and download any critical updates needed. Click here for more information and learn how to automate this process.

  • A software firewall or a hardware based firewall/router is highly recommended. (The built-in XP firewall and Zonealarm are good software firewall choices and are free. Linksys, Netgear and D-Link offer very good hardware routers/firewalls.) A hardware based router/firewall will shield/hide your computer from the Internet. In a nutshell, this means your computer is not seen on the Internet so it's very difficult for someone to break into your computer as the router/firewall is the only device seen. This offers much better protection when compared to using a software firewall only. A software firewall does not shield your computer from the Internet as it relies on software to keep intruders out.

  • Anti-spyware software is highly recommended. (Windows Defender and Spybot Search and Destroy are two free programs that do a good job.)

  • A wireless network should be secured properly if used to access a University system remotely. Click here for a good link that covers the 4 most important things you need to do to secure your wireless network.

  • Microsoft has a web page that will assist with you protecting your pc at home, it specifically reviews virus protection, Microsoft Updates, firewalls, and anti-spyware protection. http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/computer/default.mspx

  • Finally, Consumer Reports.org offers a great web-site that covers all the bases for staying safe online, I highly recommend reading it.
